Zofia Aniela Lategano – A Biography About the Artist

Zofia Aniela Lategano has been painting for over 25 years mainly with oils on canvas. She continues to develop her own personal style using thick brushstokes to depict the ever changing skies and landscapes on large canvases. She recently completed a series of large landscapes depicting vast beaches, skies, clouds and dunes inspired by the beautiful beaches on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Zofia will occasionally switch to painting in fine detail, using fine paint brushes on small canvases. Zofia’s love for the arts continues to be her focus. Her lively spirit and love of life are driving forces behind her artworks.  The beautiful environment around her continues to inspire her paintings every day.

Zofia’s interest in the arts and her desire to travel began at an early age.  Born and raised in New Jersey, Zofia graduated from Montclair State University with a Master of Arts degree in 1991.  As part of her Art Education, Zofia studied abroad at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland.   Zofia especially enjoyed a more recent trip to London and Paris and trips to Italy where she painted a series of “plein air” Italian landscapes during her stays. Zofia has traveled across the United States and to the Carribean Islands on several memorable trips which would later inspire her to paint the landscapes.  She enjoys visiting New York City museums and The National Gallery of Art in DC, as well as local galleries in order to keep in touch with the art scene of today.

Art and Nature

Zofia’s parents chose the wonderful barrier islands of North Carolina and Cape Hatteras National Seashore as the family vacation destination in the early 1970’s.   For the next 20 years, Zofia would spend a few weeks every year on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It quickly became one of her favorite places in the world.  Zofia moved to Cape Hatteras with her family in 1998 and opened her own Art Gallery in 2000 in Avon.  Zofia’s Art Gallery is both a Gallery and painting studio where visitors can meet the artist at work. Some of the most enjoyable times at the gallery are when Zofia teaches her art classes to students of all ages. Her gallery can be filled with children and adults delighted with their latest creations made with paints on canvas.

Moving and changing like the clouds and the weather…

Zofia moved to Virginia in 2007 where she immediately became involved with the Arts Community and joined the Loudoun Arts Council in the historic town of Leesburg. The local farm landscape and the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains have inspired Zofia to paint the beautiful countryside. She has completed several large landscapes depicting the Blue Ridge Mountains in the far distance and countryside with farms in the foreground. Zofia has also been a painting instructor at the Round Hill Arts Center at the Hillhigh Orchard Art Complex in Western Loudoun County.

Zofia is looking forward to another productive year of creating new paintings and inspiring other artists to be creative and enjoy art.

Hatteras Clouds and Skies

“My paintings of the clouds, skies, sand dunes and beaches, are inspired by the natural beauty of the Outer Banks. When walking along the deserted beaches during the off season in the late fall and winter months, I am inspired to capture the feeling of vastness on canvas.  By using large rolls of canvas that can be stretched across a wall, I am able to capture the endless landscape with paint.” Zofia
